End 1959, torrential rains completely fill the reservoir of the Malpasset dam upstream of the town of Frejus. On December 2 at 21h13, the vault suddenly collapsed in a terrifying crash. Within seconds, nearly 50 million cubic meters of water unfurl in the valley into a giant wave that sweeps away everything in its path, ravaging the countryside and lower area of Frejus. At 21:50 the wave has completed its work of destruction, slowly disappearing into the sea.

It is almost impossible to answer yes to this question. The official conclusion of the court citing a "veritable trap of nature" is an indisputable fact. But could the trap be identified before the tragedy? A categorical negative answer is not scientific.

It is 21:50 in railcar No. 157 - a "panoramic" four-car red and cream - linking Marseille to Nice just left Puget sur Argens. It rushes at 110 km/h with approximately 70 passengers on board. It descends the ramp which, from Les Arcs, takes the track to Fréjus.
